Chintamani Temple of Lord Ganesh, Ujjain

About the TempleChintamani Ganesh temple is one of the most visited temples of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Built across the Kshipra river, the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh, who is regarded as the Lord of prosperity as per the Hindu mythology. Here, the Lord Ganesh is known as 'Chintaharan' or Chintamani, which actually means remover of worries, anxiety and tensions. Also, 'Chintamani' is another name used for Lord Vishnu, who is considered as the protector of the Universe as per Hindu Mythology.

Temple HistoryChintaman Ganesh Temple is an ancient shrine. The history of the temple dates back to 11th and 12th centuries. The temple was built by Parmar Kings. Chintamani Ganesha temple is constructed out of stone. Inside the temple, three ancient idols of lord Ganesha are seen in the sanctum. The biggest idol is of Shri Chintamani Ganesh. The second idol is named Shri Icchaman Ganesh and the third idol is called Shri Siddhi Vinayak. The main feature is that these idols are considered to be 'swayambhu' or self-manifested. Lord Ganesh is accompanied by his two wives, Riddhi, and Siddhi. The images of Riddhi-Siddhi are placed on the either side of Lord Ganesh. The temple also has an idol of Lord Vishnu in its premises. At Chintamani temple, Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu are worshipped together.

The temple is a unique masterpiece of architecture with its ancient origin. Chintamani Ganesh temple boasts of its artistically carved pillars. It is said that the idol was worshiped by Lord Ram, Laxman, and Goddess Sita.

Temple Legend

The history of the Chintamani temple dates back to the ancient period. It is believed that Lord Ganesh came to the earth and created the temple for himself in Ujjain.

Chintamani Ganesh temple houses three Idols of Lord Ganesh. This ancient temple has the idol which is one among the Shasht Vinayak (6 different idols of Lord Ganesh). It was established by Goddess Sita. According to the mythological references when Lord Ram entered into Mahakal forest with Goddess Sita and Laxman, Sita had laid down Shat Vinayak to make their journey free from the obstacle. Shri Chintamani Ganesh is one among those Shasht Vinayak. Shri Chintamani Ganesh is a very popular temple and it is the said that those who pray here with devotion are rewarded with the fulfilment of their desires.

Festivals, Puja, and Celebrations

A large number of devotees visits the temple on Wednesdays since it is considered as a ruling day for Lord Ganesh.

The temple is decorated during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.
