About the TempleMeera temple is one of the most beautiful temples around, the Chittorgarh fort. This magnificent temple is dedicated to Meera and Lord Krishna. Meera, an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna was the wife of Bhoj Raj Singh, who was the king of Mewar. As Chittorgarh was the birthplace of Meera Bai, who was the most ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, Rana Kumbha built Meera Temple to honor her devotion to the God. The Temple consists of gorgeous idols which are carved on its pillars, walls, temple campus and in the sanctum. The bhajans written by Meera in praise of Lord Krishna can be seen inscribed on the temple walls.

The temples of Lord Krishna and his ardent devotee Meera Bai are located next to each other in the same complex. Meera temple is the place where Meera Bai worshipped Lord Krishna. She was the widow of Bhoj Raj Singh. Rana Kumbha requested Meera Bai to come back to Chittorgarh after the death of her husband as he wanted Meera Bai to continue with her adoration for Lord Krishna. To convince her, Rana Kumbha built this temple of Meera Bai and also the Vrij temple of Lord Varah. A memorial of Meera Bai’s mentor Sri Rai Das was established next to the Meera Bai temple. A statue in this temple has five human torsos merged together with a single head. It implies uniting all the five varnas or castes of people on their path to reach the Almighty.

Temple History

Meera Bai temple is built according to North Indian style of architecture. The temple has an open arcade and four canopies in each direction. The temple is located in the compound of Kumbha Shyam temple at Chittorgarh fort.

On the request of Meera Bai, her father in law "Maharana Sangram Singh-I built a small shrine of Lord Krishna near the Kumbh temple which is famously known as Kumbha Shyam Temple or temple of Varah. The temple was constructed in 1449 by Maharana Kumbha. There is also a small memorial in the temple which was built in the memory of Sage Ravidas of Varanasi.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is located at Udaipur which is around 98 km away from the temple.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Chittorgarh which is 2 km away from Meera temple.

By Road: Meera Bai Temple is located near Chittorgarh Fort at a distance of 5 km from the centre of Chittorgarh on Fort Road. The temple can be easily reached by rickshaw, bus or taxi.
