About the Temple:Located at Orchha in Madhya Pradesh, Chaturbhuj Temple is consecrated to Lord Vishnu. The name Chaturbhuj literally means "one who has four arms" and it refers to Lord Ram, an incarnation of Vishnu. The temple is a multi-leveled structure which is a beautiful blend of a temple, fort and palace styles of architecture. The temple was originally built to install an image of Rama, as the main deity. At present, the temple houses an idol of Lord Vishnu with four arms. Hence, the temple is known as Chaturbhuj Temple.

Temple History and Temple Legend:
The temple was constructed by the Bundela Rajputs of Orchha. The temple construction was started by King Madhukar Shah and completed by his son Vir Singh Deo in the early 16th century. Madhukar Shah built this temple for his wife Rani Ganeshkuwari who was a devotee of Lord Ram.
As per the local legend, this temple came into the existence after the queen Ganesh Kuwari had a dream where Lord Rama asked her to construct a temple for him. Madhukar Shah was a devotee of Lord Krishna whereas his wife Ganesh Kuwari was an ardent devotee of Lord Ram. Next day, queen approved to build the Chaturbhuja Temple. Later, she went to Ayodhya to obtain an idol of Lord Rama that was to be installed in the new temple. After returning from Ayodhya with the idol of Lord Rama she kept the idol in her palace Rani Mahal, as the Chaturbhuj temple was still under construction. When the temple construction was completed, the queen decided to enshrine the idol at the Chatrubhuj temple but the idol didn’t move an inch from the palace. Hence, instead of the Chaturbuj temple, the idol remained in the palace. Later, the idol of Lord Ram was installed and worshiped in the palace which was converted into the Ram Raja Temple.

Temple Architecture:Chaturbhuj temple stands 344 ft tall. The temple design is compared to that of a Basilica and it resembles the four arms of Vishnu. The structure is a multi-leveled palace with an arcaded opening, a huge entrance, a tall central tower and fortifications. The Chaturbhuj temple has tall cone shaped spires. The interior has many halls. The mandapa of the temple is built in the shape of a cross and is stated to be in the Islamic style. The temple's exterior is ornamented with lotus symbols. The temple faces towards the east and is located nearby Raja Ram Mandir, which stands inside Orchha Fort complex. The ceiling of the central dome is covered with bloomed lotuses. It is said that the towers of the temple were covered with gold plating which has been pilfered over the years.

By Road: Chaurbhuj temple can be reached by buses or by hiring taxis. The place has well-connected network of roads.
By Train: The nearest railway head is Jhansi Junction which is 13 km away from the temple.
By Air: The nearby airports are located at Gwalior (150 km) and Khajuraho (195 km)
