Duladeo Temple, Khjuraho, Madhya Pradesh

About the TempleLocated on the bank of the Khodar River, Duladeo Temple or Kunwar Math is nestled in the Khajuraho village of Madhya Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a linga. The temple is spread over the area of six km. The term ‘Dulodeo’ literally means “Holy Bridegroom”. The temple faces towards the east. It is believed that Duladeo temple was built after the construction of other temples in Khajuraho.

A Shivlinga has been installed in the center of the temple. The temple also has the idols of Mahakal, Lord Ganesh, Goddess Ganga, Goddess Parvati and Virbhadra in the mandap area of the temple. The temple has been built in a circular shape and the temple pillars are comprised of paintings of various Apsaras in different dancing forms.

Temple History and Temple ArchitectureDuladeo temple was constructed by King Madanvarman of Chandela dynasty. The temple history dates back to 950-1050 AD. The major attraction of this temple is 'Maheen' craft. The temple is laid in the seven chariot plan. The temple walls are engraved with the images of celestial dancers in erotic postures. Duladeo temple belongs to the traditional religions of Hinduism and Jainism.

The temple is consists of a sanctum, vestibule, maha-mandapa and a porch. The design and features of Duladeo temple have some resemblance with the developed medieval temples of the Southern and western India. The temple shikhara is a clustered round by three rows of minor shikharas. The temple maha-mandapa has a unique design and decoration. The maha-mandapa is large and octagonal. The walls of maha-mandapa depict twenty apsaras brackets, grouped in a bunch of two or three. Duladeo temple has many unique features which distinguish it from the rest of the Khajuraho temples. The dancing apsaras on the inner walls and the flying vidyadharas on the top row of the facades enthrall the visitors.

The word ‘Vasala’ appears at several places in the temple leading to the general belief that Vasala was the chief architect. There are others who think that ‘Vasala’ was the mark of masons. In 1986, the temple was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to Reach

By Road: The temple is well connected by roads. The buses ply regularly from all the major cities of Madhya Pradesh.

By Train: The nearby railway heads are are Mahoba (64 km) and Harpalpur (94 km). Satna (117 km).

By Air: The nearest airport is Khajuraho which is 3 km away from the temple.
