The 5th day of Navratri Festival, the nine divine nights of Goddess Durga, represents the worship of Goddess Skanda Mata, the fifth mightiest form of Durga Devi.She is the mother of Kumara Skanda or Kartikeya and hence the name revered ‘Skandamata’. Skanda is the leader of God’s army.

Appearance and Power of Maa Skanda:
The Goddess, in a golden colour and bright complexion, appears with her son Skanda, in his infant form on her right lap, seated on a lion with four hands and three eyes. She holds her son with her right upper hand and a lotus flower in her right lower hand. Her left upper arm is with a pose to grant blessings to her devotees and a lotus again in left lower hand. As she is seated on a lotus flower, Skanda Mata Devi is also known as Goddess Padmasani. Skanada Mata Devi is the Goddess of fire and the daughter of Himalaya who got married to Lord Shiva. Hence, is also worshipped in the form of Parvati, Mata Gauri or Maheshwari.

Legend behind Goddess Skanda:
The legend says that when an evil demon, Tarakasur, blessed with powerful boon by Lord Brahma, tormented saints, holy men and mankind. They pleaded Lord Shiva to rescue them and he married Parvati Devi who later gave birth to Lord Kartikeya. And it was Lord Kartikeya or Skanda, who came to their rescue and demolished Tarakasur.

Skanda Mata Devi has a powerful significance to be worshipped in Navaratri. Her magnificent and charming appearance gives a magnetizing effect on her worshippers. Being the Goddess of Purity she blesses her devotees with a blessed journey of life realizing the real truth of life. Her devotees leave behind their sorrows and pain to achieve divinity and great satisfaction in life.
There is a strong belief that her followers obtain a state known as ‘Vishudh Chakra’ on the fifth day of Durga Pooja. Vishudh means ‘undiluted’ and hence they enter a state towards undiluted thoughts. The impurities and sorrows of life are removed and hence they get involved completely into Goddess Skanda Mata. Worshipping her on this day will bless them with divine joy and happiness. She fulfills and graces all her devotees true wishes and grants true peace in life. The path towards Moksha is achieved by her devotees only by her divine grace.

Goddess Skanda Mata is worshipped by chanting the following sacred mantra:
सिंहासना गता नित्यं पद्माश्रि तकरद्वया |
शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी ||
(Sinhasan Gata Nitayam Padmashrit Kardvaya |
Shubhdastu Sada Devi Skanda Mata Yashashvini ||)
The meaning of the mantra means: Skanda Mata is admired for having given birth to a courageous and remarkable son, Lord Kartikeya, and is worshipped as the Mother Goddess. She holds two lotus flowers in her two upper hands and doesn’t need a weapon. Skanda Mata Deviblesses her devotees with immense love and affection who worship her with true devotion.
