OverviewVishwakarma is believed to be the main architect of the Universe. He is the son of the creator, Brahma and is the official architect of all the Palaces where the Gods reside. He is also the designer of all the flying chariots and weapons of the Gods. Since Vishwakarma is the God of architecture, Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrating the Vishwakarma puja with great zeal. On this day the workers take a break from work and the machines are worshipped. Vishwakarma puja is a resolution time for all the workers and craftsmen to increase their productivity, to gain an inspiration from the God to create novel things and think of novel ideas. According to legends, it is believed that the universe was born out of Vishwakarma's navel. This mirrors the story of Brahma creating the universe. According to another legend, Vishwakarma is believed to be born out of Ocean churning. As per the Puranas, Vishwakarma was the divine architect who designed Heaven (Swarga), Lanka, Hastinapur and Indraprastha. Vishwakarma is worshipped by artisans, mechanics, welders, architects, engineers and other craftsmen for prosperity in their business.
Vishwakarma Puja Ritual:Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated on the last day of Bengali Bhadra month. It is also known as ‘Bhadra Sankranti’ or ‘Kanya Sankranti’. Vishwakarma Jayanti is the most important and auspicious day for craftsmen and artisans. On this day, puja and rituals are performed at workplaces and at temples. The idol of Vishwakarma is kept overnight along with puja ingredients. Clean all the instruments and sit facing towards east. Chant mantras. Lit Akhanda Diya and perform the aarti. It is then taken to the room where machines are placed in order to acquire blessings for these machines and to ensure that no accidents occur in the future. Apply turmeric and vermilion on the machines that are worshipped on Vishwakarma Jayanti. These brings good luck. The workers seek the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma. The next day in the morning idol is immersed in the water. On the day of Vishwakarma puja, in many states of India such as Bihar and West Bengal kite flying is celebrated. Colourful kites cover the whole sky. It is a time of joy and celebrations. Several kite festivals are also organized on this occasion.
