About the Temple
The temple of Sundha Mata is a nearly 900-year-old. Sudha Mata temple is dedicated to of Goddess Chamunda. The temple is situated on the hilltop of Aravalli ranges named Sundha which is located in the Jalore district of Rajasthan. It is considered as one of the most sacred temples by the natives in Rajasthan.
It is believed that Goddess Chamunda appeared at this place along with seven shakti to kill the demon Bakasur. The images of these seven shakti can be seen behind the idol of Goddess Chamunda. The temple complex is divided into two parts. The front portion of the temple houses a Shiva temple. The main temple is decorated with an archway.Temple History
Sudha Mata temple was built by Chauhan King Chaching Dev during 1312 AD. Sudha Mata is also known as Adhghateshwari, which means a Goddess without a torso. Here, the head of Goddess Chamunda is worshipped. As per the legend, when Lord Shiva was performing Tandav carrying the body of Sati, Lord Vishnu decided to chop the body of Sati with his Sudarshan chakra in order to calm down Lord Shiva. It is believed that Sati's head fell at this place. Hence, this place is considered as one of the Shakti Peeths.
In the temple premises, there are three historically important inscriptions which narrate the history of the different regions. The first inscription of AD 1262 describes the victory of Chauhans over Parmaras. The second inscription is from 1326, and the last one is from 1727. Sundha Mata temple stands 1220 m tall and it is made up of white marble. The temple pillars are somewhat similar to that of the Abus’s Dilwara temple pillars. A very beautiful idol of goddess Chamunda stands under the huge rock. Here, the head of Goddess Chamunda is worshipped. It is said that the trunk of goddess Chamunda is worshipped at the place named Korta and legs in Sundarla Pal. BhurBhuva Swaweshwar Shivling is seen in front of the idol of Goddess Chamunda. Apart from BhurBhuva Swaweshwar Shiv ling, the main temple also has idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesh which are considered extremely ancient and extinct.
The temple appears a magnificent white marble structure. The temple premises has some wonderful inscriptions which indicate the victory of the Chauhans over the Parmaras.Festivals and CelebrationsThe festivals of Navaratri and Diwali are celebrated joyously. During Navratri, devotees throng the temple in large numbers.
How to reach
By Road: The temple is located 64 km away from Mount Abu and 20 km away from Bhinmal. The buses ply regularly from all the major cities of Rajasthan. Of late, ropeway service has been initiated to facilitate climbing the Sundha Mountain.
By Train: The nearby railway head is Hospet which is 1 km away from the temple.
By Air: The nearest airport is at Udaipur which is 170 km away from the temple.
